Wright On

Florida Times-Union reporter Michael C. Wright covers the ins and outs of the Jacksonville Jaguars. In this blog, he'll share behind-the-scenes anecdotes not published within the pages of the T-U, in addition to offering up incessant ramblings about nothing such as road trips, crummy hotels and not-so-delicious press box food. Perhaps he'll even delve into serious discussions about NFL issues. So ask questions, participate in conversations, or just learn more about the Jags.

Wilford injury not serious

Just spoke with Jack Del Rio at the close of Tuesday's night practice and it appears that Ernest Wilord's knee injury isn't serious.

Del Rio said an MRI has been performed and everything "looks good." The club also signed former Florida punter Eric Wilbur, an undrafted rookie. The Jaguars also released punter Tony Yelk.

In other practice news, rookie guard Uche Nwaneri was carted off the field because of heat-related cramps. Del Rio says Nwaneri will be fine.

Hi Michael
It seems that they are setting the stage (and the expectation) that Reggie or Matt won't make it. I doubt that they would cut them both (what would that say about their drafting prowess?) and my guess is that Reggie (with one arrest and three uninspiring years behind him) is the sacrificial lamb. Assuming he's healthy Wilford looks like a lock. I thought at one time he was iffy based solely on the tender he signed. No matter what they say right now about Mike Walker, I don't see him getting cut. They've hinted at the fact that his knee might not hold up so maybe they'll find a way to put him on IR or the PUP list.
I suppose Yelk had to go. He seemed to be the better punter at the scrimmage and that's not good when you draft a punter and anoint him before he ever takes the field.

Mark,

You could be correct about the situation at receiver. Receivers coach Todd Monken talked extensively about the receivers and most of the writers walked away with the impression that Williams' days are numbered. Monken talked about how he just doesn't "get" Reggie or Matt and he's not sure he ever will. Monken did say, however, that Matt has found a niche as a No. 3 slot receiver. As for drafting, it's an inexact science. The Jaguars aren't the only team missing on first-round picks.

You're correct about Walker, too. They won't cut him. It's too late for him to go on the PUP list (that's for guys that couldn't be cleared before the start of camp), but he could be a candidate for the IR. Monken said Walker needs to get to the point at which he can practice every day so he can develop into the guy they think he is (a polished receiver with good hands and deceptive speed).

As or Yelk, did you forget about that punt in which he whiffed on the ball? Yelk offset an impressive performance by kicking a ball went about six feet in the air. Not good.
