Wright On

Florida Times-Union reporter Michael C. Wright covers the ins and outs of the Jacksonville Jaguars. In this blog, he'll share behind-the-scenes anecdotes not published within the pages of the T-U, in addition to offering up incessant ramblings about nothing such as road trips, crummy hotels and not-so-delicious press box food. Perhaps he'll even delve into serious discussions about NFL issues. So ask questions, participate in conversations, or just learn more about the Jags.

Training camp by the numbers

The Jaguars, at times, like to throw around useless factoids that can be somewhat entertaining. Here are a few recent numbers thrown out there that are pretty interesting:

12 1/2 - Maurice Drew's shoe size.

5 - special teams only practices during camp.

10 - night practice sessions at camp.

18 - practices open to the public.

40 - loads of laundry per day at camp.

40,000 - pounds of laundry washed in a week at camp.

20,116 - pounds of weights in the weight room.

50 - gallons of detergent used in laundry each week.

10 - gallons of bleach used for laundry each week.

2 - pairs of shoes used by Fred Taylor each week.

2 - workouts required for each player each week.

60 - footballs used.

200 - bags of sunflower seeds consumed over a two-week period (this is a real stat, folks).

17 1/2 - John Henderson's shoe size.

1 - Superman logo printed on the sole of Drew's cleats.

Jaguars depth chart for Atlanta Part 1

So here's Part 1 of the Jags' depth chart headed into this weekend. We'll start with offense, update with defense, then special teams later.

Torn ACL to land Cotrone on IR

Jaguars fullback Anthony Cotrone will go on the injured reserve sometime Monday after tearing his left ACL on Friday in the club’s scrimmage.

A rookie free agent from Maine, Cotrone had caught the attention of the coaching staff with his power, pass-catching and blocking ability. Just last week, Cotrone (6-2, 260 pounds) was reportedly the only player on the roster to have a 100-percent catch average. Cotrone injured his leg late in Friday’s scrimmage.

The club anticipates filling Cotrone’s roster spot with tight end Isaac Smolko, who spent eight weeks on the practice squad last season before being placed on the active roster last November. The club cut ties with Smolko on June 16. But against the Washington Redskins last year in the preseason, Smolko played five positions – fullback, tight end, linebacker, defensive end and on special teams – drawing praise from the coaching staff about his versatility.

AFC South headlines

Other than the Jags holding their mock game on Saturday, not much is happening with the club.

The Jags spent Saturday shuffling different units - offense, defense, punt team, etc. - on and off the field to simulate how they'd handle such situations in real game situations. The club even stood for the national anthem before the start of everything. For the most part, not much was happening other than what was glorified walkthrough.

The Jaguars will take Sunday off and return to the practice field on Monday.

So because of the inactivity here in Jags country, here are a couple of headlines from the AFC South you can chew on:

Here's a piece on the Texans coach Gary Kubiak giving his team a break from Houston Chronicle reporter Megan Manfull:

Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star ponders whether any of the Colts are Hall of Fame material:

Be sure to check out Vito Stellino's story tomorrow in the Times-Union and on Jacksonville.com. I've had a chance to preview it. It's very interesting stuff, no doubt.

Rookie hazing

Here are a couple of pictures from practice this morning of the haircuts a couple of the rookies are sporting, thanks to the rookie hazing going on out here.

Picture quality isn't great - hey, it's a camera phone. But here you go.

More practice, less scrimmage

Expect the Jaguars scrimmage at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium tonight to be more of a glorified practice session than an actual scrimmage game.

Because of the club's injuries, Jags coach Jack Del Rio said he plans to scale back the live action tonight. What fans will see tonight, according to Del Rio is, "Less live scrimmage; more workload."

In the first half of the scrimmage the team will run through a "thud" period in which defensive players won't actually tackle ball carriers. Following that will be skeleton (7-on-7), one-on-one pass-rushing drills and some live action towards the end.

Leftwich a Titan?

Not really. But the former Jags quarterback is working out for the Titans and could become part of a "ready list" in the event that Vince Young suffers an injury.

Take a look at the story here: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/trainingcamp08/news/story?id=3511916

In other news, the Jags, according to a source in the personnel department, said the club discussed the possibility of bringing in former Cowboys receiver Terry Glenn, but "nothing came of that."
